Drive Shaft Data
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:54:10 pm »
Bus Identification: 19202
License Plate: CM - 71592
Year: 1992
Make: Blue Bird
Model: AA RE
Engine: Cat
Miles: 198,331

Description of problem:

During a routine test run, a loud snap was heard under the bus. Upon further examination the drive shaft snapped loose from the bus.

The bus was towed back, but can't move or be driven. The repair is about $5000.00. The shaft snapped causing it to hit the ground which also did some damage to the rear axle.

It is not worth putting money in to. That is an actual cost estimate for repair.

*Swearing and banging heard from the CFO office* The first God ____ day of the ____ing budget and that piece of ____ is already costing us $5,000! >:(

I think this was planned. ;) :P :o

Well, it's either $5,000 for a bus with a clean service record or a lot more than that for a new one!

How long is the driveshaft in Res? It cant be that long unless I dont know something (which i dont). Since the front of the engine faces the rear of the bus, the transmission has to be pretty short in order to have a driveshaft.

I'm not sure in real life.

There really is no sense in spending this much on a bus that's almost 20 years old. If Sam repairs it, he's freaking nuts. It broke due to years of wear and tear.

Kodie, I don't know what to do...
 $5000 is alot of money for an old bus...although we can get AT LEAST 7 more years off that bus. I would do it except for two things;
1. Everyone who isn't from Ca and doesn't know how things are done will think I am crazy
2. The budget was just put into effect

Erm...I can't remember off the top of my head, but if I am right nobody bid that bus. We do have a surplus of buses...lets put it over in the far corner by the spares, and fix it if we ever need another bus.
DO NOT part it out without asking me. I want the bus useable if we ever need to put it back in cervice. Thus said, I want it cleaned every once in awhile. The spares are over by the washbays...the hose should reach.

I already put it in the far back corner. The bus wont need washing as it WILL NOT be touched. It will be in the back corner, I don't want anybody in it, or near it.

7 more years is nonsense just so you know... parts wear down.. even in CA

What did he do?

Sam, the budget has not gone in to affect... this decision is final. It won't go in to affect until September 1st, as I said in the budget thread. Keeping the bus out of service would disturb the budget more, with insurance and registration.

I'm getting real sick of hearing about the budget changing every day. My budget IS in effect.. I don't care who says what. Fuel was used, I subtracted it already... I'm using the shop budget.

Kodie, a district near me has the same issue...with an early 90s AARE. They don't have the money to fix it, but would if they could. Parts deteriorate...but when it is cheaper to replace the part than the bus...we replace the part.
Eric, we will keep insurance on it, so it will not affect the budget at all...whether we start today or in September. (Honestly, one week of keeping track for maintenance won't be atrociasly more expensive).

Fine, KODIE can start tracking his budget as I said earlier, but his funds will need to last until August 31st, 2010. The 10-11 budget won't be in effect until September 1st, 2010 (along with this year's budget not being OFFICIALLY in effect until September 1st, 2009).

Damage was done to the axle because the drive shaft shift arounded more than it should have when it fell. I'd appreciate if you'd let me do my job...
