10001 - Engine Issue
« on: January 12, 2009, 08:05:27 pm »
While en route today I noticed the engine acting up pretty bad. It wasnt idiling right, and kept cutting out. I'm going to be sending it out, because this is something beyond what I can fix. I did talk to the guys on the phone from Cummins and they said something may have **** in the engine somewhere. If this is the case, it will be an expensive fix $$$, and the bus will be down for over a month.

If possible I would like to take 19001.

They confirmed that the bus has a **** cylinder. Apparently when the cylinder **** the piston kept pushing up and down, and it began to shred metal off of it. After that.. oil began to poor out onto the engine and got into the electrical components. So.. its quite a mess. Looks like I might be on a spare for awhile.  :-\.. not even a nice spare! blech!

OO absolutely :) Beats driving a Gillig or Crown any day.

What they need to know is.. what are we going to do with this issue? It would basically be an engine rebuild.. which is quite expensive. They claim your best bet is just to sell it and replace it, but I dont know that I totally agree. It's 9 years old.. but its still in semi-decent shape.

I'm no mechanic or CEO, but.... Based off of my observations of our real-life 2000 TC2000 FE Cummins (bus 25), I would replace 10001. Bus 25 seems to be the bus with the most downtime in the whole fleet. I think it had its engine replaced a while ago (maybe the same issue as 10001 :D), and it just doesn't perform as well as its twin, bus 24. It runs fine, just not the same and a lot of downtime.
Also Coordinator and Broom Swinger of NCD
St. Margarette Church

On my bus:
-All standard Arrow Transportation rules apply
 -Electronics permitted, must be noiseless
-Only dry snack items and water may be consumed

I have an extra 09 RE that I could bring over sam for you if you wanted it because I ordered extra because the price was cheaper but I dont have a place for it so if you want it I could swing it by sometime.

well the one I have is brand new and its actually a 2010 I was mistaken but it doesnt have but 200 miles on it cause I havent done anything with it. Thats why I said if sam wants me to bring it over you all could have it cause I ordered extra to get a cheaper price but I have nothing to use the extras for. And yes its CA Spec'd

The bus is only 9 years old, but if we treat it well we should be able to get 15 more years out of her...
I will consider a newer replacement...newer bus means less capacity though, and more expensive.

15 years on top of 9 ! wow! that sounds like alot to me.. but thats how yall do it in CA. Either way.. are we getting it repaired or what?

Also.. why does newer mean smaller capacity?

I think it would be cheaper to repair it than go new, although I know you all want a chance to drive an ICRE!
Newer than 2004 buses are required to have seatbelts etc. This reduces the capacity of a full-legnth bus from 84 to 62.
